Something Sweet...

There are days when one just craves some good old ice cream with friends far or near, while sitting on a field of green, green grass. It was one of those days- sorta. My prima Kristy is in Orlando- she joined us with her popsicle. My sister is in Dade county- she joined us with some vanilla ice cream in a mug. And I'm here in Broward- joining them with a little strawberry sorbet. Yup, we are all in different areas, near, far, working & doing life.... but we came together to share some sweetness. I love you girls. You deserved that ice cream all the way!

Recap Weekend & a Little More...

Just a quick recap of this past Sunday at Flamingo Road Church Kids Doral. We had record time for setup and tear down. Great job to all the Life Changers who made it possible!
My friend Gio is interning with us until the end of December as our Praise Team Coordinator. She had her first meeting this past Sunday with parents and kids. She recruited several parents to SERVE!!! How exciting!! I actually spoke to a mom today about it and she is so grateful for the blessing the Church has been to her and her family that she said she would serve wherever needed,not just in praise team. Praise the Lord! Love to see God use other people- Gio thank you!!!!
After church, we had our Life Development: Family Movie Day. Though not many families came, this time, God sent the right ones into our arms. Thank you to the Lema's for opening their incredible home of love for our families. There were some leadhers there ministering to other moms. It was off the charts. The kids made 3D glasses, home made mini pizzas, enjoyed plenty of sweets, played, and watched
The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl.
Someone reminded me that it doesn't matter how many people we expect to come out to an "event", sometimes God just sends the right number of folks that need a Hug, Prayer, Encouragement or just some good ole', plain fun. Thank you Jesus for using us- with all our failures, tiredness, etc. Help me and others who have been entrusted with your Sheep to love them and lead them closer to You.
And as I close, FRC Kids Doral is having an Attendance and Friend Contest. At check in, we want our kids to fill out their name on a ticket and drop it in a box. For every visitor they bring, they can add another ticket. They have until November 8th to throw in as many tickets as possible to win the prize. The contest prize: WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE book AND MAX the plush toy. So come and invite! That's all for today. Goodnight! ;)

The G Offering...

At the end of our series Heroes and Villains, every ministry participated in the G Offering? This was our Generosity offering campaign [for lack of better wording]. Here at Flamingo we have a heart for the LOST in this world. We have a huge God vision: 50 campuses, 100,000 people, and 150,000,000 budget. As we all know that to do a lot of things [and sometimes really big things] it takes the M word= money. None of us really like talking about it, or hearing about it. But we were all challenged to give an extra offering [aside from our tithe] to be a part of a bigger picture- to go beyond Me. It wasn't about equal giving, but equal SACRIFICE. Thank you to everyone who gave joyfully and sacrificially.

Well, our kids at FRC Kids Doral blew my mind away. Kids came in with jugs of pennies, $5.00 bills, envelopes with checks of $100.00,and plenty of change. Thank you for the parents that prayed together as a family and obeyed God's nudge and are taking the time to train their kids in an obedient and Godly manner. Our kids contributed almost $400.00 to the G Offering. Way to go FAMILIES!!! God will use everyone's sacrifice/obedience in big ways that we could not even begin to understand. HE is a good God. Our Provider. Our Everything!

What a "I Miss You" can do...

At Flamingo Road Church we just concluded our Heroes and Villains series. Hands down, one of my all time favorites. You can always check the teachings out right here. I was challenged to live a life living and choosing to be a hero rather than a villain. We saw 341 baptism. We had record attendance across the board of 12,000 +. God just is moving so huge. I am grateful to be part of the ride.

At FRC Kids Doral we totally had a blast. And for all those families that missed out---- ahhhh----- try not to again. There is just way to much AWESOME stuff that we are learning from GOD'S Word. How amazing is that!!!

Well, as you read the title to this post, I have a great story from this past Sunday. We are trying to be more consistent in writing "We Miss You" cards & Birthday Cards to our kids. This Sunday one of our little second graders came. [He hadn't been with us for almost 2-3 weeks] Right when his mom picked him up, he stopped and asked me, "Did you guys send me a postcard saying you missed me?" I said, "Yes, we did! Did you like it? Did it make you feel special?" The little boy replied back, "Yes, I loved it! Thank you so much for remembering me."

I cannot tell you what I felt at that moment. You see, his parents are separated. That's why we see him on and off. But you should have seen his face. It's like his whole world just lit up. His mom told me later on that he put that postcard right on his wall and would look at it everyday!!! OMG! I could just cry all over again. I share this only because you never know who may need a little encouragement or acknowledgment- whether YOUNG or OLD.

"Recruiting Secrets"...

Read this great article today on "what really works when it comes to recruiting a great volunteer team." - by Ali Thompson. [article, Recruiting Secrets] I wanted to share my notes.

1. An Invitation: "Wideman says that smart recruiters never apologize for giving people the opportunity to serve, bc you're presenting them with the greatest opportunity they'll ever have aside from following Christ. By giving them the opportunity to serve, you're presenting them with an opportunity to move forward and grow closer to God."
You never want to look desperate.. instead think strategically on how to invite people creatively. Give an invitation a party feel. This one is so simple "not easy", but simple: just ask people personally. "People WANT to be asked." Hey, that happened to me!! I was asked to fill in. ;D Lastly, just go out into the crowd. Just like Jesus, "come follow me." He recruited His disciples.

2. Focus on the Big Picture: Never recruit on duty or guilt. Cast vision: your church and ministry. I should be able to summarize that vision in 30 sec. or less. Help people see their service will have an eternal impact. Oh so true!!

3. Redefine your Church Culture: Our role as the church is to equip the people to serve and use their gifts. How can I do a better job of "equipping, assigning, maximizing and encouraging people."

4. Plan Ahead: Assessment. Wideman, "I don't work on the church that I have, I work on the church that I want to have." Measure your approach and Recruit al the time.

5. Build Relationships that last: This is so true. I need to act on that and find leaders that can do the same. Retaining is recruiting. "If they feel like your friend rather than 'just a volunteer,' they'll want to stick around." Make face-to-face contact, especially on weekend services.

6. Share the load: Pour into key volunteers and equip them to bring others on board.

7. Look in unexpected places: loved this story. One child director observed a couple worshiping during a kids worship time in the service. Saw their excitement, director invited them to serve, and they said yes!! Look into teens as well to serve. ---> yes I love that!!!

8. Pray: This was last in the article, but should be first in our daily life. Recruiting is do ne by faith, not by need. Philippians 4:19: "God will supply all your needs."

Hope you get some stuff out of this... If you lead in kids or any other ministry. I know I need to act and act now!

Heroes & Villains: Power Up..

This past Saturday, the Flamingo Road Church Doral Life Development team got together for our "Heroes Power Up". FRC's new series, Heroes and Villains, kicks off this weekend- Sept. 12-13. At our Power Up, we had 3 Heroic teams put in place: a street team, phone team, and creative team. Our street team, led by three moms and a group of Rushlians, passed out over 150 invites to folks in our community. Our phone team called families and our creative team built, painted, and drew tons of exciting props for the weekend Environment. The Diversity, Collaboration, Thinking, Creativity, and Potential of this day was off the charts and we can't wait to see what GOD has in store for us at our FRC Doral Campus. I just wanted to thank each adult and teen there. You planted seeds for people to take a step closer to checking out what the church is all about and who Jesus is totally all about. THANK YOU!!!

Bloggers Book Study: ax.i.om by Bill Hybels...

Happy Monday morning! What a week and weekend! Shout out to my husband, Heredes, and everyone from Potential Studios and others that made F309 a major success.

This morning we will be in pages 40-48 in the book ax.i.om.

9. The Fair Exchange Value: It comes right out of 1 Timothy 5. In any type of "corporation"- "leaders try to extract the most output from staffers in exchange for the least amount of input". Hybels says that sadly it even happens in the church. He shares the occurring years [5 yrs] that this would happen at Willow. Every year staffers hoped for that raise, etc. But it didn't really happened but they served excited and still at a high level. But after a couple of years, and seeing more buildings and ministries being built, the level began to drop and some had to have that talk with Hybels. He shares about one of his leaders who had to find a marketplace job. At the end Hybels and him worked it out and he is still working and leading after 32 years.
"I had espoused the value of fairness for as long as I could remember, and here I was losing one of my best workers for one simple reason: I was violating the fair exchange value."
And to all of you on staff at Flamingo Road Church- man, you guys rock! Thank you for the sacrifices you take in day in and day out. God has your reward.

10. The Value of a Good Idea: Hybels was in Spain leading a conference and was heading back home but needed to bring in a good idea to see change in Willow's congregation. "I might be one good idea away from a message series that could fire up our church again." Before leaving, he walked on the beach, back and forth, until God gave him that best good idea. God did. ;)
He asks, "What is the value of a good idea? A thousand lives added and tens of thousands of lives touched- all of which could be traced back to a desperate plea to God on a rainy day in Spain."
"Leaders traffic in idea creation. The best leaders I know are ferociously disciplined about seeking them out and incredibly committed to stewarding them well."
I loved this small section: talking about- to get to that one best good idea, you need to allow for hundreds or even thousands of mediocre ideas. "After all, if your big 'aha' is number seventy-eight, you'll never discover it unless you discipline yourself and your team to think through numbers one through seventy-seven."
Steward good ideas well. And great leaders keep a pad of paper and a pen by their bed. ;)

11. Build a Boiler Fund: Mismanagement is one of the many causes organizations fail/close down. And most of the time it has to do with a financial area. "The painful truth is that unless we become consistently profitable, we will not exist to minister another day." Proverbs 6:6- we should be like the ant storing up a reasonable about of reserve. As a church, there should be a boiler fund, so when something huge breaks down, etc. it can be replaced by the reserve we have set aside. "If you and I really believe that the local church is the hope of the world, then I believe we should do everything in our power to make sure that, at least from a financial perspective, the ministry can thrive well into the future."

Bloggers Book Study: How the Migthy Fall...

If you missed the introduction to Jim Collins book "How the Mighty Fall" jump over to Matt Miller's blog here. I will begin the second part today- the first two stages of decline.

Stage 1: Hubris Born of Success:
Collins opens up with the beginning of Motorola's fall from greatness. It started with stage 1.
Hubris: "excessive pride that brings down a hero, or alternatively, outrageous arrogance that inflicts suffering upon the innocent." Yikes!
Multiple forms of hubris:
1. undisciplined leaps
2. company's pursuit of growth beyond what what it can deliver with excellence
3. bold, risky decisions of conflicting or negative evidence
4. denying that the company may be at possible risks, due to other competitors
5. And finally the most insidious form of hubris: Arrogant Neglect
Markers for Stage 1: [self- diagnostic checklist of possible decline]
1. Success entitlement, Arrogance: people begin to believe that success will continue almost no matter what the organization decides to do, or not to do
2. Neglect of a primary flywheel: leaders neglect [due to distractions] a primary flywheel, failing to renew it with the same creative intensity that made it great in the first place
3. " What" replaces "Why": rhetoric of success [we're successful b/c we do these specific things] replaces understanding & insight [we're successful b/c we understand why we do these specific things & under what conditions they would no longer work]
4. Decline in learning orientation: leaders lose the inquisitiveness & learning orientation that mark those truly great individuals who, no matter how successful they become, maintain learning curve as steep as when they first began their careers.

Stage 2: Undisciplined Pursuit of More
Opens with the thought that many companies fall because of complacency
"Over reaching tends to increase after a legendary leader steps away."
The best leaders, in these two sections "had a peculiar genius for seeing themselves as not all that important, recognizing to build an executive team & to craft a culture based on core values that do not depend on a single heroic leader." [eg. Walmart, Best Buy]
Though he is a "leadership skeptic" he concludes: "while no leader can single-handedly build an enduring great company, the wrong leader vested with power can almost single-handedly bring a company down."

Where the Wild Things Are...

Today I bought the book "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. Why? Inspiration of the new movie coming out in October directed by Spike Jonze. If you haven't seen the movie trailer.. Uhh.. do so right now.

After reading the book, I googled it to learn a few more wild things about it. That's when I came across this blog- which I believe is Spike Jonze's blog and others that work with him? maybe?

So, what's it about? - "Simply put, this a place to learn about things we think are great and to share with you the things those things helped make. Wild Things indeed…"

So far some really cool stuff. I came across one of Spike's friends blog as well. Oh so "sketchy" cool. Enjoy!

Bloggers Book Study: Crazy Love...

Chapter 7: You're Best Life, Later:
Chan states that we need to make a distinct choice: to either just live life OR actively run to Christ. There is "Beauty in a deep walk with Christ."

I love that he bases a lot of this chapter off of Hebrews 11- The Hall of Faith. Woopee!!
What should or does our life look like daily? When we look at the "Hall of Faithers" :) do we feel that we would never be as "spiritual" as them?
Chan reminds us that all had their mistakes, failures, etc... but they ALL trusted and had faith in God. "By faith.."v. 17

Faith: doing what others see as crazy... And when we think of all the "hall of faithers" were called to do, it was a huge leap of faith.
Chan: "Something is wrong when our lives make sense to unbelievers"
Vs. 35-38: The martyrs... "the world was not worthy of them"-- read hebrews 11: man it is incredible!
Bottom line is these believers had faith in a real God; they obeyed to the end- even if they saw what was promised or not...they gained a better resurrection.

There is so much to write, but as condensed as possible, Chan shares what love is..It is based around Christ's two commandments: love God with all & love others. He talks about what if we take the Bible literally. Giving and loving. "As we love more genuinely & deeply, giving comes more naturally, taking becomes unattractive." Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice. Just dwell on that for a while. Live a life of reckless abandon. Compassion. Loving the poor, the weak, the lost.

Chapter 8: Profile of the Obsessed:
Obsession: "to have the mind excessively pre-occupied with a single emotion or topic."

Lovers: obsessed with true love; a kind only found in Christ. [Luke 6:32-36; Luke 14:12-14] Be willing to forgive and LOVE those who have hurt you.
Risk Takers: obsessed with God's kingdom.
We have all prayed on a trip, "God protect us. Put your angels around this car..etc." We need to pray "whatever it takes" prayers.
Friend for All: obsessed to connect their lives to the poor in some way.
Chan saying here that we need to be intentional to meet people not like us who are in need.
Crazy Ones: obsessed to obey God rather than doing what is expected or fulfilling to status quo
Chan shares his selling of his house for a smaller one. Everyone thought he was crazy. But he asks "who really is the crazy one?" Those gladly sacrificing time, house, comfort are trusting in God's promises.
The Humble: obsessed with knowing the sin of pride is always a battle. Fight pride with focused prayer
Servers: obsessed with knowing that serving is not a burden.
Chan used to "work" hard to show commitment to God. Now he has realized he serves out of being madly in love with Christ.
Givers: obsessed with giving to those in need.. not takers
Soul Journers: obsessed with thinking about Heaven frequently.
Ex. of his wife's grandma: at a play. He asks her if she enjoys it. She answers "I don't know if this is where I want to be if Christ returns."
Engrossed: obsessed with a committed, settled, passionate love for God above & before every other thing & every other being [Deut. 6:4-9]
Unguarded Ones: obsessed with being RAW with God. To have true intimacy with God, we need to be "naked" before Him.
The Rooted: obsessed with meditating on the Word with delight, not out of religion or schedule.
The Dedicated: obsessed/more concerned with his/her character than comfort
Sacrificers: [Psalm 50:9-12;14] just being faithful to our Savior in every aspect of our daily lives

After listening to these chapters [free audio book here] I'm not sure how I felt. I don't know if I agree or disagree with some of the ideas shared. I appreciate Chan's heart to live a totally unselfish, abandoned life. I get what he is saying. Like he said, many accept salvation to get a spot in Heaven and forget that there is a life that needs to be lived for Him. Jesus told the disciples to leave ALL and follow Him. I guess I was torn between what is over spiritualized and what is just getting and living out the two commandments. Well, you decide if you want to read or listen to the chapters and expand your thoughts for discussion.

Being Robbed Stinks...

Man, if you haven't joined our Bloggers Book Study I am telling you, you are missing out on some really great growing tools. Jump on over to Pastor Lilibeth's blog and read her chapter review. Really great stuff!

Last night, Heredes and I arrived home around 7:30ish to find out our house had been broken into. The burglars went through our bedroom. They stole: our flat screen TV, Wii with games, DVD player, a guitar, two Minolta cameras, some of my jewelry, my broken iPhone, a shuffle [a kid left at church, boo], Heredes MVP watch, a laptop and a mini mac.

I'm glad the burglars had a sweet time shuffling through our house. Hope they meet Jesus one day- cause Heredes and I, well we forgive you guys. I'm so grateful God really places His peace in our hearts. I was reminded last night [I controlled my anger & tears very well] that all this stuff is just STUFF. We live in a fallen world. And no matter what God will supply ALL our needs. Thank you Jesus for your protection- that is all I care about.

Heredes- so courageous- invited the four cops to FRC. And I was able to bake cookies with a thank you card and Flamingo invite for our neighbors. Praying for a relationship here- who knows maybe we'll have a Parilla cook off- Brazil vs. Argentina.

Just a reminder that all this material stuff doesn't fulfill. It is just Stuff. And God works everything for GOOD for those who Love HIM!!!

Day 8- Bloggers Book Study

Today I will be summarizing Chapter 10: A leader's Prayer. Here goes...
"God, Mold and Shape Me to My Full Leadership Potential."
Hybels opens with a moment on his boat in Lake Michigan praying and journaling to God saying, "God I want to be a better leader..." He felt led by the Holy Spirit to take a trip down the Old & New Testament & study some of the greatest, diverse leaders & take a look at the "praiseworthy components of their leadership." And so he begins...
God, make me like David:

His faith-based OPTIMISM
Attempted feats for God where more cautious leaders would never have considered.
A giant could not intimidate him, a murderous king could not paralyze him, & genocidal enemies could not defeat him
Where God pointed David, he marched confidently expecting grace & power to be revealed along the way
David clung to hope even when he morally failed.. "I [David] thought, 'Who knows? The Lord maybe gracious to me & let the child live." 2 Samuel 12:22
"Optimists expect to experience God's greatness & love, even when they're facing bleak circumstances."
The people we lead hear way to much pessimism. They need & deserve to hear leaders who are optimistic, who will be passionate about the hope that is there & ahead. Change can happen, will happen. Transformation will happen through the changing power of Jesus' love & forgiveness.
Leader, don't we need that optimism?

God, Make Me like Jonathan:

His capacity to LOVE
A bright, gifted, young leader whose "position in life was not as impressive as the condition of his heart."
He offered his heart on a platter & offered it to David. [Who would be the one to take the throne]
Pastor Troy says this to us all the time, we are not here to use people, they are not our little tools. We should not sacrifice community on the "alter of kingdom cause."
Don't we all want to be remembered as leaders who LOVED, rather than just a man/woman of vision, of strategic intent, or one who achieved a lot of goals?

God, Make Me like Joseph:

His INTEGRITY/PERSONAL HOLINESS
We know his story right? His power & influence grew quickly/meteoric [i like that word]. His family didn't appreciate that very much. They actually hated him for that.
Power/leadership tends to corrupt
Oh but Joseph was such a leader, a man who never gave in to corrupt behaviors. He didn't screw up his leadership. He stayed unstained
The Key to his integrity? He saw his leadership as a holy stewardship; He would stand accountable to God. Yikes! That puts it in a whole different perspective.
We can achieve this integrity by being surrendered daily to Christ
He shares what is probably my favorite hymn & line: "Come thou Fount"- Prone to wander Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.
Hybels share how he fights these moments of wandering with a few spiritual practices: writing out prayers, solitude, accountable to people, secret acts of service.
What will your practice be? Mine?

His DECISIVENESS
One of his finest moments: Joshua 24:15
More and more we leaders must take responsibility for leading people to decision points concerning life issues
This is the guy who is plainly going to ask, in love, "who will you choose- God or not" "Come on get on board, don't wait or simply get out"
Hybels pretty much says, if your looking for that person to ask people to get serious about membership, tithing, volunteerism, small groups [Lily], etc. this is the man for the job.

God, Make Me like Esther: [here you go leadhers]

Her COURAGE- For real!
"I'll do the right thing.. and if I perish, I perish." [Esther 4:16]
Placed into leadership practically because of her beauty, she was at a crossroads to either save her people or not
Willing to loose all status, position, security, etc. to do what God Called her to do
Believed that certain values were worth living-and dying-for.
"I find myself thinking that for church renewal to occur, a whole generation of leaders is going to have to manifest the courage of Esther." -Hybels
What or who is stopping you and me to lead courageously?

God, Make Me like Solomon:

His WISDOM
Hybels shares a bit of the sleepless mind of a leader. All those questions & thoughts that go on in the middle of so many nights.
To solve those questions, etc. we need to pray and ask for wisdom. And when someone asks how they can pray for you- tell them, I need wisdom; I desperately want it.
People look to leaders to set direction
How can we choose the right course apart from God's wisdom?

God, Make Me like Jeremiah: [Just finished reading about him, so loved reading this section]

Boy, talk about someone's ministry that never, ever went well
He was so honest to God. He wasn't cynical or crazy, just plain honest. He told God how he felt, many times alone, abandoned, but he always allowed the Healer to mend his broken heart
He stayed Faithful to his calling
He was able to turn from despair to hope because he was honest with God, he didn't deny his disappointments
Hybels talks about those times when we put on the "game face" only to be hurting or disturbed inside. You know those moments, or maybe not, when you just smile & you convince others your okay- but you don't convince your heart that it isn't
When we are "emotionally authentic" like Jeremiah, God just pours down his hands and touches us with "healing balm". Lamentations 3:2b-23

Led the rebuilding of Jerusalem's wall. 52 straight days of non stop work
This man new how to celebrate a win; He knew how to throw parties!!!
As leaders we need to be "intentional in planning the victory parties as we are at setting & achieving the organizational goals"
All work and no play makes for "dull people and dull churches". No celebration is a formula for wearing people down & draining their joy.

His INITIATIVE
Poor Peter, the Bible shares everything about his leadership- the good, bad and ugly.
But even though many times he may have not made the best choice, he was always the first one to take initiative- even if that meant cutting a soldiers ear off to protect his Savior & friend who was being falsely accused
He was the only disciple who got out of the boat
Hybels shares when other church leaders bash other church leaders who are taking bold initiative to make a kingdom difference. We need to join those leaders that are "initiating kingdom action, trying something new, & launching out in ways that keep the enemy on his heels." - that's why I'm at FRC ;) Thank you Pastor Troy

God, Make Me like Paul:

So Hybels ends with this great leader, Christ follower, lover of Jesus Christ!!
We see Paul's INTENSITY.
Hybels does a little modern day comparison. Michael Jordan [intensity to basketball] & Paul [intensity x's 1,000 for Jesus Christ].
Heather, I mean Chicagoans have an enormous advantage when it comes to understanding the concept of intensity because of the man- Michael Jordan.
Jordan's legacy of focus, work ethic, competitiveness and drive to win shows pure intensity
I just love this statement: "My heart's desire is to pursue an imperishable wreath with the same intensity that Michael Jordan pursues a perishable one."
Let's ask God for greater intensity, not the type that is "frenetic busyness" but an "intelligent, Christ-honoring, apostle Paul-like intensity"
May our prayers shape us, & may God's grace lift us to our full leadership [God] potential.

I am so glad God allowed me to read this and share it. I look at the lives of these men and women who have gone before us and they stinkin' ran the race and they reached their God potential! I love that I can be at a church that thrives and pushes for that. I share this verse with you all and then I will close the way this chapter closed. Hebrews 12: 1 "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders & the sin that so easily entangles, & let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." -They & above all, Jesus, is cheering for us on this race. Whoo hoo!!!

Did you know:

that last week my church, FLAMINGO ROAD CHURCH, baptized 333 people.
2 out of those 333 were two girls from FRC Kids Doral. Congratulations Mia & Casey!!!! [2 & 3 grade]
The team at FRC Kids Doral set a goal of 5 kid baptisms for 2009 [I'm not always good at setting goals. Not always sure what is good or not]. We have had 5 kids get baptized so far!!! It's been reached so we will passionately lead & serve for 5 more. ;)
Last week I realized how much I enjoy Disney better than Busch Gardens & all their parks. And not because of the rides, mostly because of the leadership. [& it is a little more magical]
FRC Doral Life Development will have a Orientation on July 23 [& 26]. Excited to see new faces, structure, and eternal change for our campus
Every Wednesday is Pixar Day at FRC at noon. Join us in the main auditorium, bring lunch in a creative lunch box, and meet some new leaders and life changers

First, Heredes and I are back from FRC Pensacola and a short vacation. It was nice to get a away for a bit, but the rain was not that fun. But at least we have a lot of nourished and green grass.

My close friend [prima=cousin] Kristy married this past Friday to her sweet man, Evan Garcia. The Garcia's wedding was beautiful. I was blessed to be a part of her court. They are a special couple that love the Lord and they are highly favored and blessed. Prima you made me cry!!! Congrats!

With that said, I was looking at some old pictures and videos [since the next day after the wedding I got the 24 hour stomach flu- ugh] and I just had to share these pics and video of two of the most cutest boys I know: Jonathan and Joshy. I have taken care of these rugrats since they were newborns. I love them and their family dearly. They were part of the wedding too. One video is of them playing around and the other is Jonathan promoting my husband's blog: heredes.com. Listen to the ending, it sounds like some monster growling in the background. [It's hilarious]

I usually never, ever do this but here are some of my paintings from this past semester. I took Still Life and Portrait atelier classes. [for the second time] The media is Pastels: hard and soft. I need to work on pastel technique/creating the right texture especially for the skin, allowing to leave my strokes in and not smudge and smoothing out my edges. [and there is always the proportion issue]. So, yup. Hope Heather is happy. ;)

If you know me, you know that finishing up my bachelor degree has been a looooonnnnngggg journey. April 27th, 2009 marked the day of that accomplishment.

This semester was a very hectic one, with: internship, 2 drawing classes, kids ministry @ frc, taking care of a home and husband... Phew... But God big time gave me strength and perseverance to finish everything and on time. I was blessed with a great cooperating teacher and supervisor.

Well, just to wrap it up. Though I really didn't want to walk, I did. First, because I made Heredes walk back in 2007. Second, it was too much of a big accomplishment to not walk.

Most memorable moments of that day were: Adding Ribeiro, in pencil, to my card so I could here the presenter say: Marcella Meza Ribeiro. Seeing my family up in the stands, especially my daddy. Phew! I almost cried- don't know why. Maybe it's bc he has a great smile ;). Exiting to U2 and Coldplay. Having a great lunch @ Texas de Brazil with my family. And coming home to a clean house- compliments of my husband & his creativity. So thank you to my family for setting an example of finishing what you start. And to a very special couple that paid my way this last semester. $2,000.00 as a Gift Revolution gift. Glad to repay you back with a degree.

My next mission: find a job!

I found some time to update my blog. Sorry world. ;) The next few posts will be updates on what I've been up to or learning. Thanks for reading.

How Internship is going:

- I was able to be a part of the Scholastics Art Awards. All the art interns helped show Jr. & H school art work. It was a cool time and I was able to see a lot of great work. These kids are talented. Check some of their art out:

Also, watch this video interview on the artist Jacqueline Roch [who is amazing- pastel artist] and watch till the end and tell me who you see. Ha!

- I've been teaching now for a month I believe. I was supposed to start teaching one period a week and add to that. I started teaching full days my second week into it. My first lesson was on the Abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky. Here are some of the kids works so far:

The last two are works from our autistic students. Our next lessons will be sewing, weaving, collage, and maybe a self-portrait project.

- This past week was my critique for my still life painting class. I am really grateful that God has given me a great professor who has helped me improve with painting with pastels. I'll put pictures of my final work later. This week I start portraiture.

These are just a few updates of school and internship. I'll share more stories of all the wonderful students later.

My 26th Birthday...

Thank you to everyone who sent wonderful birthday wishes or called me for my birthday.. It was incredibly sweet. So grateful!

Heredes, the wonderful husband that he is, did exactly what I wanted. We had lunch at my parents home. Corn lasagna- stinkin' delicious!!!!!!!!!!!

Before we ate though, Heredes revealed his gift for me. A one of kind art piece by H himself. Beautiful monochromatic abstract pieces. [with a little collage thrown in there..hehehe]. AND Celine Dion concert tickets for this friday!!! woohooo!!! Thank you baby.

My parents got me a gorgeous jewelry box. Thank you!!!!!! And my sister got me my favorite movie "Never Been Kissed" and the cutest card ever. Thank you to those who gave me gift cards, money, and other gifts. :)

On another note internship and school are going well so far. I am exhausted, but worth it right?! :) lol. Updates later to come.

I Love January...

Why? Well, I love January because so many that I love have a birthday in January. [Not that I don't love you if your birthday is not in January]

First, it was my brother's birthday on Wednesday. I posted- leave him a comment.

Today is baby Legend's 1st Birthday. His picture to the left. That's our student pastors- Scot and Holly- baby. They are a great couple.

It is also my youth pastor's, Mr. J, birthday today. He passed away on August 4, 2004. Today is his 33rd birthday. Katrina put up a video of him and the "band" when we played at Dade Christian. Yes, check it out here. You may find some familiar faces. Thank you MR. J for being a great youth pastor and so much more. I see the impact in my life, my husband's, and so many others.

Katrina thank you for always reminding us of his great love he had for us, the youth, and the lost. I love you sooooooooooooo much!!!!!! Thank you for being the first to show me a pastor's wife's heart. Katrina do you have a picture of him?? I don't have a digital one. Pass it along please :)

Some other great people to celebrate: My DAD!!! Pastor Ricky- tomorrow. Donna Hawley, my cousin Marcella, and me- on the same day. My cousin Mayaya. Oh my, way to many.

School Has Begun..

The New Year has started with a New and FINAL semester. Tuesday I went back to school. I begin my internship. This week is orientation week and Still Life drawing. I have begun to ingrain in my mind the fact that there will be no life these next four months. If you see me remind me of that please. I was a bit nervous, but when Tuesday was done, I am really excited that I am finishing up to be a teacher- an art teacher. If you could just pray for me for dedication and focus. I'll keep you updated.

Yes... it has been a busy month in December... but wow, what a December!!! What a year!!! There's been up's and down's and praying and hoping that in 2009 I will embrace the new year in a whole different, more JOYFUL way.

This year I kick it off by starting my INTERNSHIP!!! What? I can't believe I am so close to graduation. It is something I have been yearning for so much. I also have goals i want to set and accomplish, but I haven't worked on the list yet- but I will.

I know my husband is starting a new look for his blog, and maybe I'll join him, but I hope that I can continue blogging faithfully and share with you all some inspiring, transparent, encouraging things. ;)

TGR Stories Part 2...

1. I got my friend/co-worker a Hello Kitty ornament. She spent some time with me while Heredes was on TGR road trip. We stopped by Target that day and she pointed it out. She almost bought it, but I convinced her not too. I later bought it, wrapped it and left it on her desk.

2. A group of us drove to the Broward County School Bus pick up place [pretty sure that's not the official name] at 4:30 am. We served Dunkin Donuts coffee, donuts, and gave out gift baggies with TGR cards to all the bus drivers as they prepared to pick up students. I have a new appreciation for them. Great job guys!! You are appreciated!!

3. Today, I put some GR cards/JuiceBlendz free smootie cards to foam stockings as a gift to my friends at Fed Ex, UPS, DHL, and the Post Office. Hopefully they'll catch on and participate- since there are only 6 days left.

4. Our Sawgrass Campus Pastor was out last week on a GR Rally in Arkansas with Pastor Troy & our Executive Pastor. Him and his wife are expecting twins. At work she sat at the front office and we chatted a bit and she was telling me that they hadn't put up any decorations for Christmas and with the babies growing she hasn't had much energy after work to pull things out and setup. So, as a GR, birthday gift, and because she helps Heredes with some work stuff ;) we surprised her at night by going over and helping her decorate her house. Her expression was priceless!!

So 6 days left. Guess what? This is a global movement to inspire the world. Where you are right now, that's where you can start. Take time to think, pray, ask- how can you gift someone. How can you gift someone today. Let's not forget the Greatest Giver & Greatest Gift- "For God so loved the world that He GAVE His one and only Son JESUS. That whoever believes in Him will not die, but have everlasting life." -John 3:16

Remember, "Because when a gift is given, whether BIG or SMALL, it makes a world of DIFFERENCE."

If your in ministry full time, part time or serve every other week, you know you have some not so great weekend's. But you most definitely have tons and tons of awesome weekends. Yesterday was an AWESOME Sunday at Flamingo Road Church Doral Kids.

I wanted to say thank you to all who served yesterday and those that came in afterwards to tear down on their day off of serving. ;) Thank you for making a kingdom difference! Thank you for taking initiative and allowing me to go and speak to parents! Yay! Excited to end strong and start a new year even stronger.

TGR Stories...

As promised, here are some of the stories I have started with the gift revolution:

1: Key West/Road Trip: Met a 5th grader at the port who fell in love with my funny christmas hat. I gave it to her with TGR card. She hung out with us the whole night.

2. Homestead/Road Trip: The team went to the Knausberry farm. We bought 5 dozen cinnamon rolls and we gave 1 out for free for the customers as they waited in line to place their orders. In the process, we also bought a couple of shakes for folks. It was awesome to hear reactions like this: "Wow. Are you serious? I've never received anything for free, especially not from a stranger." and "You guys keep passing hope around!"

3. Couple Saturdays ago: Heredes and I got gifted at Great Wraps!!

4. Two Sundays ago: I was driving back to church and Heredes was behind me in his car. A gentleman was selling flowers on the street corner and the rain was coming. I called Heredes and asked him "Do we have an umbrella in your car." H- "yes" M- "Give it to the guy and a GR card please." Done. He was a bit drier that afternoon.

5. At our All - Day Staff, I bought a $25.00 Shell gift card [11:30 pm] for the next person who would come to pay for gas. I saw a gentleman go in, unfortunately I didn't see his reaction but the cashier lady gave me the thumbs up. Hope he was blessed.

6. At All-Day Staff, our team blessed a family with $1500.00. We also gifted one of our pastors who was sick: HP!

If you read my husband's blog [go to it after you read this] you know that something BIG is brewing over at Flamingo Road Church. We just finished "The Series before the Series" series [lol] yesterday. This weekend we will be Unwrapping everything and displaying the new Christmas series. [It is soooo much more than a series] I can't say anything else.
I did want to share these pictures of what we did at Kid's yesterday [at Doral]. Each child/family was given a gift and they can only open it this Friday. The kids were so ecstatic! They are also excited because they will be learning and participating in the same things as our youth and as their parents.

A couple of years back I was introduced to the author Francine Rivers. The first book I read by her was "Redeeming Love". I could not put it down. On one of my birthdays, my friend Holly Logan saw that I had her book and she too agreed that her books are amazing. She bought me two books from Rivers' "The Mark of the Lion" series. [I don't have the third one yet] I was very grateful and nicely placed them on my book shelf for when I was ready to read them.
Well time passed and I came across Rivers' "Lineage of Grace" mini books about the women in Christ's lineage. I bought "Bathsheba". I loved it. Words can't explain what her books do to me. When done, I went back to the Family Bookstore and could not find the other four.
Now, two months ago I picked up the book that Holly bought me, "A Voice in the Wind". OMG!!! It totally sucked me in. Amazing- so amazing that when I finished it I picked up the second one, "An Echo in the Darkness". And another added bonus was that my co-worker Jenn, who also loves her books, happened to have all 5 books from the "Lineage of Grace" series. Woot Woot!
This post has been in my heart for a couple of weeks and I wanted to say thank you to Holly and her family- first, for their friendship, second, for purchasing these books that really have done something inside of me that I am so grateful for, and lastly, for their awesome, pure hearts to serve Christ in South Africa. I love you guys- you are not forgotten or alone.

*Holly- you would love to see how I act when I read the books. Heredes laughs at me because first, he never sees me read and second, when I read these I am like in Lala Land.

Last night a group of us went to the Bank Atlantic Center to see ColdPlay. Heredes, Ricky, and I sat together and all I can say is a big thank you to Pr. Heather. My husband turned 26 years old today!!!! Can you believe it! I can't. We are so close to 30 years old. Ahhh!!

I am running on 4 hours of sleep, but it is all worth making my husband feel ten times more special. I got him a few little gifts and placed them in bags with little tags describing what might be inside and a clue to find the next gift. The gifts were: 1. Matrix conditioner 2. Got2Be gel 3. Something for his drawers 4. running socks, mini to go Axe, an exercise shirt [for our 5k] 5. breakfast 6. Sugar free Red Bull & regular Red Bull 7. gums and mints 8. two boxes of Nerds

9. take out dinner from Grand Lux [we'll see].

Ooof! I forgot to mention that when he woke up and went to the bathroom there were 26 birthday sticky heart notes on the bathroom mirror.

I am so grateful for my husband. He is my King David. God's favor is all around him- not because he is nice, good, creative, etc. BUT because he has given Christ full control of his life! For that I am SOOO thankful. Thank you to all who just love him and support him and lift him up in prayer. My husband- You are one of a kind and I am glad God created you for me. ;) Have a WONDERFUL day my love!!!!!

Look at how AWESOME God is. I really had a crummy day yesterday. Actually, there are to many days that I allow to become crummy. I allow pride to step in, I allow insecurity to kick in, I allow a bad attitude to sneak in, and I allow myself to isolate myself from people-yabadabadaba....

This morning I had a really good devotional. Basically, it was talking about pride and taking every thought captive. I asked God to help me pray about everything and for His help in learning how to discipline my thought life. I prayed specifically for the phone call I was going to make to the doctor's office right after I finished my Q.T. [quiet time] I asked that I would not assume that whoever was going to pick up was going to give me a bad attitude. I asked that He would help me just be kind and loving as I made the phone call and drive down to South Miami.

Well, when I told Jesse about the referral I was going to pick up, she said she forgot to request it and that it was her fault. She asked if I could come at 2:00 pm and I reminded her that I am in Broward now and it would be difficult to miss work. She automatically apologized again and said she would FAX it! What!?!? Are you kidding me!?!? I was so grateful.

You may ask what the big deal is, here it is. In the summer, it was the same person & doctor's office that wouldn't give me a referral to the cardiologist or neurologist & had pretty crummy attitudes. AND they don't fax referrals to anyone. They made that very clear. But today, I believe God BLESSED me because I took a step of faith to pray for my attitude, to confess my wrong to Him, and be a light to them. He delivered. I don't have to drive to South Miami & Jesse was so helpful & so willing to fix her forgetfulness. I had to share this because when God does something great, even if it may seem small to many, my lips will proclaim His goodness.

Some updates: we have moved, but correction we are not fully unpacked. We're getting there.
It's a cute 2/1, with plenty of parking, and close to church. Praise the Lord!

Here is a pic of a purse from Peru that my abuelita Juanita gave me when I visited in the summer. I love it! Gracias!

We have moved to one service at Doral and today we had the whole kids team present and it was awesome. Here is a pic of the game we played. Our "Indiana jones'" had to eat monkey brains (oatmeal) that their partners fed them. They all won prizes: the messiest won wipes, the one who ate the most a box of monkey brains, and the stylist eaters hairspray. It was a great Sunday as we learned about knowledge and being a good influence.

For now that's it. Beach baptism September 28.

Making Vision Stick...

I read this awesome and short book by Andy Stanley, Making Vision Stick, on my trip to Lima, Peru back in July. I have eagerly wanted to share my notes with you guys and since I haven't updated my blog in awhile, I thought this would make up for my inconsistency. :)

- Vision is about what could be and should be, but life is about right this minute.
- To make our vision stick the most important thing to remember is: I am responsible.
- It's the leaders responsibility to ensure that people understand and embrace the vision of the organization.
- 5 things to Increase adhesiveness:
1. State the Vision Simply:
- Easy to communicate
- Must be memorable: "It is better to have a vision statement that is incomplete and memorable than to have on that is complete and forgettable."
2. Cast the Vision Convincingly:
- Communicate it in a way that moves people to action [The book of Nehemiah.]
a. Define the problem: -every vision is a solution to a problem - What's at stake issue that grabs
b. Offer a solution
c. Present a reason - Why must we do this? Why must we do this Now?
3. Repeat the Vision Regularly
- Think of the most beneficial times to repeat vision. Vision should evoke emotion
4. Celebrate the vision systematically
- What's celebrated, is repeated. Stories, emails, notes, letters.
- "What happened last week that made you feel like you've made progress in your mission to lead people into a growing relationship with Christ?"
- Nothing gives definition to vision like pausing to celebrate a win.
5. Embrace the vision personally
- Live out the vision. People will see and it will catch on. It's liberating
- You begin to be an influential leader.
- communicate it honestly
- Vision Slippage Indicators: Projects, Products, Programs, Requests, Stories, Complaints
- DANGER: When there are no stories to tell, somethings wrong.
- It takes bold leadership to make vision stick!
- He ends with a great story of his son's baseball team and the coach.
- Remember we are in this world for so much more than fun activities. We are here to partner with people/students/kids to reach a personal relationship with Christ.
- "Pay the price. Embrace the vision. And do whatever it takes to make your vision stick!"

This is a great hour or so book read. I am not as disciplined as my incredible husband who is in the process of reading and listening to like five books, but I'm getting there. I really enjoyed this book and I am pushing to make our vision stick.

My Shoes, My Shoes, My lovely Running Shoes...

Heredes [read his Utterz interview] and I have started to train with Debby Malivuk- our Global Worship Pastor's Assistant- who is an extreme athlete. She runs, swims in the ocean, has done the Iron Man in Australia, and well, her and her husband are beasts.

We started last Monday at Vista View Park here in Cooper City at 6:30 am. We both ran a little over 2 miles non stop. And we have kept on running at the gym everyday last week.

To run without getting hurt you need good running shoes and good running shoes we bought. Debby took us to a store where they check your feet, tell you what type of foot you have, and then you test the shoes on a tred mill. I photographed them for all to see, because I really like them. :)

Today was a very exciting day because not only did we run 2 miles non stop, but Debbie had us run another lap. So 4 miles in total- non stop!!!

Heredes has really been stepping it up on the discipline side- physically, spiritually, mentally... and he is really helping me see that I need to "get ready" (thank you Pastor Troy) and step it up while I'm living in this world to do and reach my God potential.

Bragging about my Husband...

This is past due, but it is never to late to brag on the one you love. Last week, on Thursday, Heredes flew out to Texas. He was able to help for two days during Extreme Week. On Wednesday, he left early from EW because he had to "pack". When I got home, I was so stinkin' exhausted. I smelled [what do you expect- it's camp], my feet felt like giant elephant feet, and I was hungry.
So, this is were my husband's awesome love kicks in. He took me straight to our bedroom and there he set up a lovely candle light dinner. [we have guest in our house, so that's why we ate in our room] He bought Macaroni Grill, Vitamin Water, dessert- mini Haagen Dazs strawberry ice cream & mini Nutella. We prayed, ate, and watched an episode of the Office. What a way to come home and relax, huh?!
I think there are times when people worry for us because we may be to busy or too tired, etc. and may think we never have time for each other. First, I want to thank those who ask how we are doing and remind us to take care of our relationship- it's always good to check up on each other. But second, just wanted to let you guys know that God is so good to us and allows us, many times, to enjoy each other as husband and wife- as best friends. Things like what I just shared- those little things- are the positive points we put in each other's love banks. [that's what we are learning from the book, His Needs, Her Needs.]
Heredes and I don't want to leave our guards unattended, especially when it comes to our marriage. Our Celebration/Staff meeting on Monday reminded me of that. So, all your constant prayers for our marriage are so welcomed, because we know there is an enemy that roams around like a lion trying to devour whoever he can get. But the great thing is we have a Savior that protects His obedient children.- helping us, as we request, to be self-controlled and alert.

Extreme Week Rocked!!...

I've been away from the face of blog world because we had our Extreme Week camp last week. Can I say T-Y-R-I-N-G but so W-O-R-T-H it! There were about 24 kids and a little more than 25 volunteers. There were volunteers serving in the kitchen making wonderful snacks, to tech & lighting team, the worship band, small group leaders, check in and resource table team, rec team, and awesome teaching team. I cannot say thank you enough for everyone who made it possible. The kid's team was there and a lot of other new faces were involved as well. In the process we were able to add a new team member to the FRC Kid's team at Doral.

The kids had a blast as they Journeyed to the Deep. [Deep standing for: Decision, Equipment, Environment and Potential- the topics our kids learned about] Each night after the teaching our kids had a theme night: team night, water night, messy night, and family night. We closed the night off with a black light puppet show for the kids and family. My friend ministers with her team through puppetry. Each child and parent received a glow in the dark necklace and the message behind the puppet show, of Christ's love for us through the cross, was just awesome.

I only have a few pictures and a snip bit video of our praise time. Again, I can't say thank you enough for everyone who participated, every parent that trusted us, and for God to give us that opportunity to serve.

The Olympics are Here...

Hope you all caught the opening ceremony to the 2008 Olympic games; it was incredible. We had an opening game party at our home with my family. There is something that I totally love about the summer and winter Olympics. One of my favorite things about the opening, besides the spectacular show, is each country walking in and representing. I get emotional when I watch countries that have 1, 2, 4 athletes representing. What an honor to represent your country- and knowing that you probably won't even win a medal. It's so much more than winning a medal- though it is a great achievement- I think it's completing a goal; finishing the race strong. I can't wait to see all the exciting moments these next few days will bring. What a reminder to continue the race we have before us, finish strong- though we may stumble- and fall into the arms of our BEAUTIFUL, AWESOME SAVIOR AND DAD. I'm here preparing for our Extreme Week camp for next week. If you have kids going into 1st-5th grade- sign them up. It's totally FREE and it is going to Rock. See my previous post about time, dates, and location.

With that said, I just wanted to talk about being sick. It sucks! I got another Nasty cold. It began on sunday when we were vacuuming our room and tearing the tiles in our shower. [we are remolding due to nasty mold and crap] Well, I think I'm allergic to dust- who isn't- and I woke up the next day with a horrible sore throat and now i can't stop coughing, blowing my nose, and feeling all achey.

So out of curiosity, what do you guys do when you get sick? What special techniques, products, or Mama remedies do you guys use when sick? Let me know here and send a little prayer of healing for me. :) Thanks!

Vacation OVER....

Heredes and I had a phenomenal time on vacation. Marco Island was chill and relaxing. We tanned, sat on the shore of the beach, walked and ran on the beach, watched movies, read, and just enjoyed doing absolutely nothing.

After we came back, we enjoyed celebrating my cousin's wife's birthday at Cheesecake Factory. Saturday we attended a friends farewell party and then headed downtown to watch Slava's Snow Show. It was so fun! Great ideas for children's ministry. After, we chilled at JohnMartin's Irish Pub, listening to live music and eating. [French Onion soup is my new obsession]

Today we visited CF West Kendall- good stuff!! After lunch, Heredes surprised me with a 1 hour massage. Ahhh incredible. Stopped by to visit my wonderful parents and then went home to clean, clean, clean. It's midnight and vacation is over, but the fun keeps going as we start work and serving again. Enjoy the pics!

heredes and I are on vacation in Marco Island. Whoohoo! There is like nothing to do but relax and chill- it's great! Right now we are enjoying a movie and dinner. I'll try to put some pictures, but I have to remember I'm on vacation. :). The beach is okay. Actually it is nice, but I'm so afraid of dark murky water that I almost cried- but I didn't. Just wanted to give a little update.

So, Matthew McConaughey just had his first baby boy with his brazilian girlfriend Camila. Now you may ask, "What's the big deal?" Well, the deal is the NAME he chose for his son.
First, if you know Heredes and I, you probably know that if and when we have our first baby boy his name will be Levi ? Ribeiro. This is the same name Matthew M. gave his son.
While reading up on the story, he said that one special gift he will give his son is a passport and that he would like to live in Brazil so baby Levi can learn more about his mommy's culture. Ha! I just laughed because I am married to a Brazilian and I just want our kids to be full of culture. :)
Third, this was just cool. They asked Matthew why he picked the name Levi and here is what he said: "Levi was another name for the apostle Matthew in The Bible. They were, in fact, two names for the same person". And then, "Our son was born at 6:22 pm," Matthew goes on to say, "and this particular time represents my favorite verse in the book of Matthew in the Bible: 'If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be full of light.'"
Now here is the cool thing. Yesterday, Heredes read to me the verse he read during his quiet time. Yup, you guessed it- Matthew 6:22. And again he read it and wrote it in his journal today.
With this said, we just got so excited to hear the name and that he went to the Bible- which is so beautiful. So, Heredes and I are stamping the name Levi ? Ribeiro for our future baby boy. [Of course, God knows when that will be and if it will be a boy] I just had to share this because it was so cool!

About two weeks ago, before leaving to Peru, I had the opportunity to go to First Baptist Church of Ft. Lauderdale for an Orange Forum with Reggie Joiner. As you may know, or not, I was supposed to go to the Orange Conference a few months back, but because of some health issues [that ended up to be nothing- I don't think] I was not able to go. So, to have this opportunity was just awesome! You can check out more about the Orange Conference here. I decided to post my notes from that day for my volunteers at FRC Kids Doral and other leaders/volunteers out there.

How does Spiritual Development Occur?

1. Remember it is a process
- It can’t be managed; It’s a God part
It’s not something that is taught; it is Organic
It’s not something that can be systemize; it’s personal
60%-70% drop off of teens leaving Christianity.
We lose if our kids don’t leave as Self Feeders.
It’s not something that can be easily measured; it’s gradual.

2. Defining Moments that cause growth:
Life Changing Truths [Biblical content- eg. a message]
Significant Relationships [Mentors, etc.]

Ministry Responsibilities [serving, volunteering, etc.]
Pivotal Circumstances: [moving away, a death, etc.]
God is more interested in my relationship with Him than being happy for a moment.

Defining Moments 1-4 relate because we can manage them. Pivotal Circumstances are unexpected.

The Role of the Small Group Leader.
They model five faith skills and model the top 5 defining moments.
They are there to show up in their kids lives!
People coming besides others is huge
SGL holds the KEY to spiritual growth
5 Faith Skills [Every SGL should create a safe place and implement:]
Navigate the Bible
Personalize/Memorize Scripture
Dialog/Pray to God
Articulate/Share their faith
Worship with your life:
Leaders/Volunteers should be worshipping with the kids
We do it together to remember that the next day is a sacrifice. [Corporate- like when we take the Lord’s Supper/Communion]
Worship plays as a symbol; we live it everyday

Little Deeper into Defining Moments:
Life Changing Truths:
There is a few truths that are important for our kids to learn with the little time we have with them. Its not our job to teach them the whole Bible before they leave our ministry.
Breakdown of teaching LT:
Pre-k: has truths
Children: learn other truths
Teens: learn more truths
It’s better to teach less and provide an effective and creative presentation.
3 Dials [relate to teaching kids truths at their age appropriate level
Love God [Wonder]
Understand Yourselves [Discovery]
Love Others [Passion]: pursuing a loving relationship with others
Jesus’ example [prioritizing scripture]
Love the Lord your God with all your heart

So you can love others

** The HARDER road is the one we should take, not the easiest road.
The easy road: believing, as a volunteer/leader, that Children’s Ministry is a babysitting club
The Hard road: learning, as a volunteer/leader, the values of Children Ministry/Discipleship and the difference they [you] make
Let’s take the HARD road

-Significant Relationships: Small Groups
As a Children’s small group leader/volunteer you DON’T need to know all the answers [we will never have all the answers] but build relationships with kids by BEING THERE

Ministry Responsibility:
Allowing teens 9-12 grade to serve now so when they are adults they continue in growth as they follow Christ
What kind of teens do we want to raise?
Consumer teens- Church is all about and for me [no!]
Plug In- rolling up their sleeves and serve others [yes!]
Again, SPIRITUAL GROWTH is a PROCESS.

I have been dying to update my blog since before I left to Lima, Peru. There is so much to say. Here is a run through of my trip to FRC Lima.

FRIDAY:
- Got to the airport 3 hours before flight took off. Paid $100.00 extra for an overweight bag.
- Flew out to Lima with my team members: Melissa Nadlman, Ricky Garcia, and Brian Fuller.
- Arrived in Lima around 11:00 pm. Didn't leave until midnight.
- Steve and Dorcas took us to our hotel.
- Shared a club sandwich with Melissa and we went to bed like at 2:30 am.

SATURDAY:
- Woke up at 6:45 am and met up with Raul and Heather and the rest of the gang at the gym.
- Got ready and had a breakfast buffet. Yum. Bread and honey is good.
- Off to meet the FRC Lima team at the Radisson.
- Watched a video message from Pastor Troy and then broke off into our teams. Melissa- First Impressions, Ricky, Fuller, HP- Mag, Marcy- Children's Ministry.
- Had an excellent time with Mariana and Patty talking about vision, ministry, and getting to know each other.
- Ate some awesome food. Tried Ceviche for the first time. DELICIOUS!
- Each member [from FRC USA :)] explained one of the ETHOS. Yes, I said it all in Spanish.
- Spoke some more with the team and went back to our hotel and got ready for dinner.
- Walked around Larcomar and then ate at the Vaca Loca.
- Had coffee with the girls and Ricky of course. [He was our bodyguard] We had some good talks.
- Spoke with hours with Melissa [awesome] and went to bed.

SUNDAY:
- Didn't go to the gym. [not feeling good]
- Left for service at our FRC Lima campus
- Observed and experienced worship there and the Children's Ministry
- Later had our final evaluation, last Q & A time with our teams. We ate at TGI Fridays
- Said our goodbyes and went back to our hotel.
- Bought a calling card to call my husband [finally!!!] So good to hear his voice and my mom's as well
- Said bye to my FRC USA crew and my uncle picked me up
- Had an awesome time with my mom's family. Uncles, Aunts, cousins, grandma, etc. Ohhhh it was GREAT!

MONDAY:
- Shopped at the mall with my aunts
- Saw Raul and Heather. LOL.
- Ate at BEMBOS. Yummy!!
- Went back to uncle's home
- Spent time with my beautiful grandma [who looks great! She has cancer, but it is going away Praise the Lord- I believe that]
- Said my goodbyes :( and off to the airport
- Almost missed my flight because of the horrible traffic.. but we did play who can spot the most volkswagon beetles. Girls won!

TUESDAY:
- Arrived in Ft. Lauderdale, on time, and gave my husband the biggest hug and kiss!!
- Had breakfast at Panera Bread
- Got home, showered, crashed until 3:00 pm

In a nutshell that was my trip. I just can't express how grateful and honored I am for my leaders to trust me to go over and share and cast vision and so much more. Thank you for the opportunity to see my family as well. Thank you Lord! Thank you church family!! Praying that next my Heredes and I can go together and serve overseas. This Fourth of July, Heredes and I joined some of the FRC Doral team for a parade. It was so humid! It was about an hour walk, but we did get to pass out a lot of flyers for our Extreme Week camp in August. After the parade, we drove to Granada to watch my cousin and some friends play for a picnic. They did so great! When that was done off we went to the Doral park to pass out more FRC and Extreme Week flyers.
We had a great time meeting families and kids. I had this bean bag toss game and it was a hit! I have to give props or recognition to my husband, number one, for helping me and supporting me and to TWO special little girls that just rocked my world. Mia and Vicky- they are my little missionary girls. Mia is going into 2nd grade and Vicky is going into 4th grade and they passed out flyers and talked to kids with no fear and with such passion. Watching them share their faith by inviting a child to Extreme Week and church through a flyer was so encouraging.
The remainder of the day, we quickly packed up all our things to run to our car before the rain caught us. The ugliest storm brewed up- with purple lightning and grey clouds. We didn't see fireworks, but we did get to pass out lots of flyers and God's love and go home to shower and sleep.

On another note, I leave to Lima, Peru this Friday to do some training and meeting our Lima team. We had our meeting today and it is going to be so much fun. I am very excited to meet the team and work and grow with them. I also get to stay one extra day to see my family. Yayyyayayya!!! I am so happy and grateful for this opportunity. That's all for now.

Saturday night Heredes, my brother Gabriel, and I went and watched the new Disney/Pixar film, Walle. It was BRILLIANT! If you haven't seen it yet, it's a must. 5 Stars for sure. From the beginning of the film it just brought you in and welcomed you to connect with this little garbage collector. And can I tell you that alot of what we learn from our Ethos at FRC, well I was able to see the importance of them by watching this movie. Gramling family you need to watch it! :)

New Hillsong Album...

Just read up on the first services at Hillsong Cape Town (which had 5 services, 3,000 in attendance, & 200 salvations) and Hillsong Australia's new album, This is our God. I can't wait to listen to the album and watch the live dvd. To view a little bit of how their live worship night went, please go here. You will be so moved and touched. This week God has really been sitting me down and showing me some simple, powerful things. Loving people. Being loved by Him. And seeing this video- watching a passionate Christ follower singing to his Healer- just made me say Thank you Jesus for the Cross. Please just watch it. People's stories are so powerful and encouraging because you see God being at work. He always is, just sometimes our view is a little blurry and we miss those moments. I'm rambling now- I just had to share this because it was powerful to my heart, hope it is to yours.

I had the privilege to be the mom and driver for the band Sirens and Sealions. What seemed to be a fun pastime (and joke according to my sis) is turning out to be something pretty serious. Who knows. On Wednesday, my sister's band, played at Churchill's at around 11:00 pm. They did so amazingly great! They played four songs. Check out NB Photography blog to see pics of the band and their work.
The band consists of: Johanna- Vox, song writer, canvas and egg shaker player. Chanti- Vox, bells, tamborine. Nick- Vox, acoustic guitar, harmonica. Marisol- Violin. Brian- Upright bass. and John (right?)- drums. Check out their myspace here for upcoming shows (PS 14 on July 5) and to hear their music. I just had to brag on my sis and her talented friends.

Here are some pics of some recent events in the last week or so. May 31st our friend's Alex and Kristel got married. I don't know if I said it already but the wedding was really nice and so them.

This past Saturday my two coaches and friends, Sara and Connie, helped me put together our Doral Life Development Movie and Indoor Picnic. We transformed the room into a huge grassy field. As the ladies covered the walls with bulletin paper (tree trunks and grass) I setup the tech stuff. Of course can't forget our two special little helpers- Samantha and Maria. We had pizza, popcorn with pretzels, and dirt with worms. All the families from preschool to teens were invited. David A. and Ashley helped as well by sharing a bit about their ministries- students and preschool. We watched a Bug's Life and learned no matter how old you can accomplish great things for God. "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12. Thank you to all the other volunteers that showed up and participated. This is a great start to what we are praying will be a great summer at Doral and connecting with families to reach their God potential.

And lastly, there is a pic of Moods the new series at FRC. Let's just say the Lord knows how much I need to hear what HE's got to say and apply it to my life. You can always check it out on our Internet Campus.

Feeling a little Brazilian...

Friday night, after visiting the Martin's at the hospital, my husband took me out on a surprise date. He told me earlier in the week to make sure to mark off friday because he was taking me somewhere that would blow my mind. When we got there I was greeted by my sister, Vicky, and David U. The whole time I couldn't read the programs, look at the stage, etc. Mind you everyone around us spoke Portuguese and the whole day Heredes had me practicing my portuguese with the new Djavan cd. Hmmm- that was a hint. So, after having some Brazilians sitting behind us yell out Yea John Mayer- the real artist came out and yes, it was Djavan. I was so excited. Thank you to David Uribe for finding the concert date and thank you to my husband for the awesome surprise. It was nice to have a taste of Brazil. Here are some pics.

Here is a quick recap of things that have been going on since my last post:
1. Went to a super beautiful, cool wedding this past Saturday. Congrats Alex and Kristel! Check out some of their wedding pics here.
2. FRC just finished It Matters series and starts Moods. Very excited about it! Welcome back Pr. Troy and family.
3. A special friend will be entering the world tomorrow around 8:30 am- Ethan Martin. Congrats Ivan and Lizbet!
4. School is almost done. I feel so frustrated, but I have two more weeks to get some creative juices flowing.
5. I think I have a special date with my husband & friends on Friday. I think it's because he is leaving me for a week again. :)
6. My friend Lashon is in town and I get to hang out with her next week before she leaves to Europe.
7. FRC had Beach Baptism this past Sunday with a concert and it rocked! Here are some pics that our friend took.
8. My grandfather's birthday is on friday and my grandma is doing better after her heavy duty chemo. Keep praying for her if you can.
9. The office gets free Jamba Juice on Tuesday thanks to Stacie Gonzalez.
10. Waiting for tomorrow's announcement on the free NY tickets to see Coldplay. I am really praying that we win.
11. We cleaned our room. We can walk around.
12. My sister's band finished recording "Thumpin of my Heart" last night. They are so goooodddd.
13. Ate chinese with my family yesterday. I love that!
14. Ovations went great on Friday. I am posting something separate about how that went.
15. And lastly, I updated my blog today and trying to give it a new look. Still under-construction.

Wanted to ask and invite you to pray with me and the staff here at FRC at 1:00 pm for Pastor Troy's mom Linda. She will be having brain surgery at 1:00 pm today for an aneurysm she got last week. If you guys can just pray for her and Pastor Troy and the family during this time, I know they will greatly appreciate it and be strengthen by the power of prayer. Also, pray for his dad who suffered a stroke a week ago as well. Thank you guys and have a great week. As some of you may know I have been in school for a while now due to the fact to the General Knowledge Exam. Without passing this exam I couldn't be accepted into the school of education. I passed the english, essay, and reading almost a year ago but could not pass the mathematics. In April I retook it for the third time and today I checked my pass/fail score and well, take a look for yourself. :)

Two classes (fall) to go, two exams left, an internship (spring) and graduation (spring). Hooray! Thank you Jesus, thank you so much!

Wow, wow, wow...

I am a horrible blogger. With work, school, and a home to take care of, I honestly have had no time to update my blog or even visit blogs. Something that HAS been on my heart to share is this new series It Matters that we have started at FRC.

Pastor Troy is teaching on several things that Matter in our walk as believers. For example, Giving- It Matters. The Church/Repentance- It Matters. You- Matter. Gratitude- It Matters. Sharing the Faith- It Matters. That is the series in a nutshell.

Before the series started, Heredes and I were invited to a very special banquet that just totally blew my mind. All those invited were placed on the stage. Heredes and I met a wonderful couple- she was just like Heredes, the husband was just like me. We had a nice dinner, dessert, and coffee. As we all faced the empty seats in the auditorium, we watched a slide show of the history of FRC. We heard Pastor Troy speak from his heart, and we saw a few members share their stories. Of course I teared up. There is nothing more powerful than hearing the stories of people's lives being changed by an awesome, awesome God and to know that He would choose to use the church to be a part of those moments is an honor. I am so thankful to be part of FRC.

We also had our Quarterly Staff Meeting on May 6 2008. We went through some assignments each ministry was given by Pastor Troy. For example, children's ministry had C.B. Smith Park and we had to observe things our ministry is doing or is not doing in relation to what we learn from the park and two leadership principles. It is so hard for me to explain in detail what Pr. Troy spoke about because- well you just had to be there. But in a nutshell- God wants us to live up to our God given potential. We live out our Ethos (thinking, collaboration, diversity, movement, potential) to get to our goal: 50 campuses, 100,000 people and $150,000,000 giving which is the motivation to reach our Mission: partnering with people to Reach their God potential.

I loved hearing: we are not here to tolerate people but to EMBRACE all types of people so in part we can partner with them and show them God's amazing love and they in part can reach their God potential. Embrace- for me so hard but how beautifully stated and how true. To Embrace.

In the battle of this mission we are to put the whole armor of God. Three things we may feel while running this race: You will feel attacked, overwhelmed and insecure. But what will I (Marcy) do to overcome those feelings and rise above them to continue in reaching the mission and goal??? Well, I have to be in the word, in prayer, and preparing my mind to not hear the lies satan throws at me.

Thank you Pastor Troy for what you taught us that night and how you are humbled and surrendered for God to work through you. My thoughts eat me away sometimes and it was just great to be challenged to not give up, not give in, but be strengthen and fight back.

I don't know where you are at this point in your life, but know God loves you, He made you just the way He wanted you to be, and He truly has provided a way out for all of us when we face great temptations. Share your thoughts- leave a comment.

Back to School...

Today I started my Summer A class at FIU- Figure Drawing II. I left class very excited and glad I am back. I am almost done with my degree, which is Art Education. Unfortunately, graduation will only happen if I pass my GK math test. I hate that test. I passed everything else last year and I am on my third try- maybe my fourth if I don't pass it again. This is really hard for me to share because to a point it's a bit embarrassing, but to another extent I am just being honest and showing you a bit of my skin.
My prayer is that I would stay excited as I continue to learn to draw the HUMAN FIGURE. My teacher is great. She's a little bit all over the place but she is super nice and she remembers me. She remembers me dropping this class two semesters ago due to scheduling, she remembers me from 2 years or more ago when I took her for drawing 1 and 2. That just speaks a lot to me and it was really encouraging. She was bumbed that I told her I had switched to education, because she said she had a lot of stuff she wanted to show me and she wanted to work with me.
Instead of thinking to myself that I have wasted all these years and feel sorry for myself, I am praying that I can make the most of it and remember that graduation day will come and that learning never ends.

26th Anniversary...

Today, after a lovely reminder from my mother, is my parents 26th anniversary!! Here is a picture from their wedding and a recent picture of them now. I love my parents and just want to say thank you for your example of a committed couple to marriage and to the Lord. Keep "keeping the Bed hott"!! :)

THIS IS AN UPDATE TO MY T.E.E. EXAM:

My mom was by my side the whole day. Got up at 5:45 am to get to the hospital by 7:15 am. Ends up that my exam wasn't until 1:00 pm. Miscommunication on the part of one of the nurses.
At 11:30 am they got me ready and I met the cardiologist. He totally freaked me out! He walked in and said, "So I hear we had a mild stroke." I was like, I did. He explained the test would show if I had one or not and if the mass was a piece of "something" that was left behind from the minor stroke. Then he went into all the details of the exam.
So, I was a little bit nervous after he threw all that at me, but they got on with the preparation. Can I say that the anaesthesia is AWESOME!!!!!!!! All I remember was a tingling sensation in my right hand, the doctor putting a mouth guard in my mouth and then I was awake. Again, it was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

THE GOOD NEWS- THEY FOUND NOTHING!!! AND THERE WAS NO MINOR STROKE! GOD IS SO GOOD/SO GREAT!

The next thing is just to follow up with my main doctor and a neurologist. Now I am at home, waiting for Heredes, a little soar throat, and resting in bed.
